I have been a band director for over 30 years having achieved much success despite only seeing the students once a week. Many of my former students have gone on to be successful high school musicians enjoying their time in band. In fact, some have gone on further becoming band directors themselves. My goal when I teach is to show the students what they can achieve with a little perseverance. Music is an important part of the brain development. It is one of the few things that we do that uses both sides of the brain simultaneously. Band also teaches them responsibility, organization, and time management, as well as the physical aspects including hand-eye coordination, improving memory, and developing creativity.
