Dear St. Monica Academy Families,
Some of you might know of Fr. Mike Schmitz. Fr. Mike can be found on Instagram through Ascension Press. Today his message said, “The ashes mean I’m a sinner, but the cross means I have a Savior. The ashes mean I am not who I should be, but the cross means there is a God who believes so fully in me that he is making me right now into the person he believes I can be.” I think this is the perfect Ash Wednesday message for our children. A message filled with hope and possibilities. A message that recognizes each of us fails, each of us deserves forgiveness and each of us deserves another chance to grow in love. In this message the ashes on our forehead become a message of hope!
Today at Mass, Fr. Tom reminded the children that fasting is not really about giving something up. Instead, it is about making room for something else. He told the children that when we take away something that distracts us, something that takes our time and attention, there is space, and quiet for new possibilities. These 40 days of lent are about clearing a space so we can embrace God’s message of hope. It about making room so we can grow, can become the person God truly intends us to be. Lent gives us the time to set aside the noise of everyday life, to open a quiet and restful place that lets God’s message of love and hope sink in and grow in us. It is a chance to see the better self and become a new creation in God. I hope in the next 40 days give you space, peace and time to experience the joy of Christ’s love and hope in His Resurrection.
