Dear St. Monica Academy Families,
I hope this message finds everyone well during our celebration of Red Ribbon Week. Many people know that Red Ribbon Week is a long running campaign that brings about awareness and prevention about substance use (alcohol, drugs, and tobacco), as well as bullying and violence prevention. Ours leans more heavily toward the prevention of bullying. Thus, I wanted to share with you the verses from Scripture I thought were pertinent for our teachers to provide to their students. The first is from Romans 12:18 which states: If possible, on your part, live at peace with all. From the Gospel of Mark we find in Chapter 12, verse 31 the following: The second is this: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” There is no other commandment greater than these. And, we also find in James Chapter 4, verse 11: Do not speak evil of one another, brothers. Obviously, there are so many more, but I wanted our teachers and now our families to find a way to tie our Red Ribbon Week and its anti-bullying message to our Catholic identity and the words found in Scripture.
Next week on Tuesday, November 7th, a representative from the Chicago Police Department will be leading an internet safety presentation for students in the 5th through 8th grades. This presentation will take place at 11:00 a.m. If you wish to have your student not sit for the presentation, please contact his or her homeroom teacher. However, we do feel that there is a value to this kind of presentation. We will be looking to set up a similar presentation for students in 4th grade and lower later throughout the year. In addition, on the evening of November 7th at 6:30pm, the same presenter will be leading an online presentation for the parents in all grades Pre-K through 8th grade.
This week we will once again announce our four Mustangs of the Month. A winner will be selected from the Early Childhood Grades (Pre-K through 2nd), the Intermediate Grades (3rd through 5th), the Middle School Grades (6th through 8th), and the faculty and staff. Those winners will be announced on Friday and highlighted in next week’s weekly.
On Sunday, November 5th, St. Monica and St. Rosalie Parish will be celebrating the 75th Anniversary of St. Monica Church at the 9:00 a.m. Mass. The faculty and staff of St. Monica Academy would like to invite everyone to join us on this day.
Please continue to keep Mrs. Fricano in your prayers. She appreciates all the well wishes and get-well cards from the SMA community. She has returned home during this part of her recovery.
Make sure visit the St. Monica Academy website to sign up for volunteer opportunities and to read about the importance of our fundraising efforts.
This is a great time to be a Mustang. If you know someone who would be interested in a tour, please have themcall us at the school office, 773-631-7880.
